A free PlanITpoker alternative for bigger teams and Jira

Last updated: .

PlanITpoker is one of the best-known free planning poker sites, and for good reason: you can start a room in seconds without signing up. Teams usually look for an alternative when they hit the free plan's 7-participant limit, or when they want the agreed estimate written back to Jira instead of copying it across by hand.

What changes when your team outgrows 7 seats

PlanITpoker's free plan seats 7 participants. Five developers, a product owner and a Scrum Master already fill it, so one tester or a visiting stakeholder pushes the team onto PlanIT Premium at $20 a month.

Pointwalk's free sessions take up to 30 people. The designer and the stakeholder who only wants to watch can join as spectators, so they see every reveal without voting.

Jira is the other gap. PlanITpoker brings issues in through an OAuth search or an XML/CSV import, but its pages don't mention writing estimates back. Pointwalk writes the agreed story points to Jira Cloud as each ticket is agreed, so nobody copies numbers across after the meeting.

When Pointwalk is the better fit

  • Your team has more than 7 people. Pointwalk is free for up to 30 people per session.
  • You want story points written back to Jira Cloud automatically, with the vote breakdown as a comment, at no cost.
  • You want to stop anchoring. Votes are private until the reveal, then everyone's walk replays at once.
  • You'd like the host to get a summary email of every ticket, estimate and spread when the session ends.

When PlanITpoker is the better fit

  • Your team is 7 people or fewer and you just want plain cards on a screen.
  • You'd rather have no ads at all. We saw none on PlanITpoker's free plan; Pointwalk is ad-supported unless you pay A$1.99 for an ad-free session.
  • You want rooms that persist. Pointwalk deletes session data within 24 hours, and the summary email is your record.
  • You already use EasyRetro and like keeping tools from one vendor.

Moving from PlanITpoker

  • Skip the export file. If you import stories into PlanITpoker from XML or CSV, connect Jira Cloud in Pointwalk instead and load the same sprint directly.
  • Swap rooms for sessions. A PlanITpoker room can be kept for next time. A Pointwalk session is one meeting: host a new one for each refinement and share its six-letter code.
  • Keep the summary. Pointwalk deletes session data within 24 hours, so the host's summary email becomes your record of what was agreed.

The Jira guide covers connecting Jira step by step, and the example session shows what a meeting looks like from start to summary. Comparing more than two tools? See our comparison of the best free planning poker tools, which also lists what PlanITpoker does well beyond planning poker.

Questions

Is Pointwalk free like PlanITpoker?

Yes. Pointwalk is free for every team and ad-supported. An optional A$1.99 payment removes ads for everyone in one session. PlanITpoker's free plan is capped at 7 participants; Pointwalk's free plan allows 30.

Can I import my Jira issues into Pointwalk?

Yes. Connect Jira Cloud and pick a board, sprint or JQL query. Pointwalk then writes the agreed story points back to each issue, which PlanITpoker's Jira import doesn't mention doing.

Do players need an account?

No, in either tool. Pointwalk players join with a six-letter code and a name.
